Energy costs are of particular concern to Canadians due to our hot summers and extended winters. There is also the matter of energy conservation, something we should all take seriously.
Here are eight ways to save on energy and do you part in helping to conserve power:
1- Cut Down on Hot Water Use
Long hot showers feel nice, but they can really cause your water heater to work overtime. This is also true for your washing machine; whenever possible do loads in cold water. You can help ensure water heater savings by lowering the maximum temperature setting on the unit. Turn the water heater off completely if you plan to be away from home for an extended period.
2- Watch Your Settings
It can be very tempting to simply turn on the air conditioner and take a nap on the couch. However, even with an efficient and well-maintained unit, all of that cooling power still uses energy. Be sure to set the thermoset to your desired temperature so that the unit will turn off.
This also applies to your furnace; determine a temperature that everyone finds comfortable and program your thermostat to not go beyond that point.
3- Use Timers and Motion Sensors
Do you tend to fall asleep in front of the TV and wake up hours later with it and the living room lights still on? An easy way to save on energy is to use timers that will switch off lights and electronics at a certain time. Motion sensors also allow you to properly illuminate areas of your property at night without leaving a light on at all times.
4- Choose Your Bulbs Carefully
Compact fluorescent light bulbs are more efficient than standard ones and can save you a lot of money in the long run. They are also safer than halogen bulbs, which heat up to the point of being a possible fire hazard. Look for the Energy Star seal of approval on the packaging to confirm the efficiency of a product.
5- Annual Maintenance
A dirty filter can reduce the efficiency or your furnace or air conditioner, increasing the electricity they require. Repair any cracks or fill in spaces around doors, windows, baseboards, and vents that allow in outside air. Taking the time to perform these basic maintenance tasks can save you a surprising amount of money over the course of a year.
6- Turn Off Your Electronics
Make sure that your computer or television is off when not in use. To ensure maximum savings, unplug them completely. Power bars with an On/Off switch make this quite easy.
7- Get a Helping Hand from Mother Nature
If you have windows that receive a lot of sunlight, open the curtains and let that warming light inside. You can also investigate solar-powered products for the home, such as solar plugs, outdoor lights, and cellphone chargers.
8- New Windows
Switching over to modern high-performance windows aids indoor efficiency by reducing the amount of air conditioning your building requires. Choose ones that come with double-glazing for maximum effect.
